Japan and the US were hardly "best friends" before the end of ww2. They had trade interests to be sure, America for money, Japan for modernization.
I don't know about you, but most of the manga i've read have not portrayed America/ns in such a fawning semi-worship life, and they certainly never almost worshipped us as gods ala Aztec.

In fact, usually the American plays the same role as the old time "token black guy".

Kind of hilarious how all American women are apparently blond and racked (though the rack might be just in comparison, i'm not up to searching for average japanese women breast size vs american).

That's interesting. Is there a way to contact you over ICQ, MSN or Yahoo? Since I'm also working on an east asian study it would be fun to speak with someone from the same subject. You can send your contact details via our contact form: http://www.mydailymanga.com/contact/

no, you're right and I guess I was being a bit of a troll. It's just that I'm an East Asian History major and such false and broad generalizations of history just really bother me.

A quick clarification: The character Turm from Psychic Girl Mai was German, not American. Also, she was neither tall, nor scantily clad.

The name of the American super-powered villain was David.

I'm sure there are still myriad political metaphors we can extrapolate from these characters, but I won't get into them now. Just fact checking.

Cheers.

Nah, calm down guys :). There are better ways to spend your energy and ressources. We could discuss this matter in deep but what good is it? I was forced to delete the comments by you and me because I saw an upcoming flame war. It was not because of the actual content, your opinion or anything. Hell no, but as I said aren't you both grown ups and know no other ways to express your point? If you think it's faulty, simply take the time to write a better article of how you analyze the stereotypes of manga. Who knows it might inspire to an even better discussion. As long as it fuels no flaming or offense anybody it will be published. :)

My comment was also deleted.

So you're saying that through manga cliches, they "nevertheless justify the view of America" (What view? Only 1?) – "and thus Japan’s – eyes" (Manga cliche = Japan's 1 view on the US?), and also "perhaps not large enough to justify a paragraph..." Large enough?

The other comment focuses on the historical accuracy, but what's the point of that - making up stuff is just a natural off-shot of not knowing what to say, where to go with the main point, and frankly, how to writing. The article fails on at least 3-4 different levels, the least of which is the picture of a guy in the horn rim glasses with a gun. America?
