Let there be manga!

June 1, 2012

I’m gonna have to get away from series-specific title for once. If you’re anything like me, then this post has been a long time coming.

Yukimura Makoto, who you may know from his action-oriented Vinland Saga, made his serial debut with PLANETES – subtle, nuanced, and definitely a superior effort.

The story of Planetes follows the crew of the DS-12 “Toy Box” of the Space Debris Section, a unit of Technora Corporation. Debris Section’s purpose is to prevent the damage or destruction of satellites, space stations and spacecraft from collision with debris in Earth’s and the Moon’s orbits. They use a number of methods to dispose of the debris, mainly by burning it via atmospheric reentry or through salvage.

The storylines sometimes revolve around debris collection itself, but more often the concept of collecting “trash” in space is merely a storytelling method for character development. This is one of those series you can read and reread without ever getting old because it gets at questions that are constantly evolving for just about anyone – who am I, who are my relations, what are my responsibilities both as a member of a community of people and within the larger community of nations? It’s a must read. Period.

Once again the credit goes to Jinchi and Manga-Sketchbook. Remember, buy it if you love it! Can’t beat that feeling of having it in your hands.
